Please introduce yourself and your position in the band.
Hi, I’m Kellen, I play guitar and sing in the band.
To someone who has never heard Memphis May Fire before, how would you describe your sound?
I suppose I would say that we are our own version rock n roll inspired riffs with a modern heaviness, and a positive, in-your-face message.
Again, for those unfamiliar with your band, could you briefly describe the band’s history from its inception to the present time?
Well, we started in early 2007 and quickly went from being a solid local band to touring band, to signed national touring band within a matter of months. From there it’s been a lot of touring, blood, sweat, and a ton of hardships and heartbreak to overcome. All in all, it’s made us stronger and better than ever before. We were blessed with Matt as our new singer in late 08 and it’s been awesome ever since. After a short break, we released ‘Sleepwalking’ last summer to rave reviews and began touring in support of it immediately. Now, with Japan and many national tours under our belt, we’re gearing up to release an EP and a full length, and are heading to Europe in October/November.
Who are you some of your musical influences?
We listen to everything honestly. Of course everyone has their own personal favorites but we truly listen to everything. I think it’s probably common knowledge now that we love Drake, (we play it before every show). Personally, I think 90’s rock influenced me a lot, (STP, Soundgarden) but I’m a sucker for heavier rock bands like Killswitch and Atreyu and I still jam Meshuggah’s ‘Obzen’.
How did you come up with the name Memphis May Fire?
I wish I had a sweet story for you, (and I’m sure there is one I’ve used before) but it was something we all agreed on at the time and it truly felt like us. When we came up with that, we were all like, “yea, let’s do it!”
You recently announced a tour in the UK and Europe. Are you excited?
We are so stoked to go overseas. We got our feet wet when we went to Japan and had an amazing time, so we’re itching to get to the UK and Europe to show them how we do it down here in Texas.
Do you have any wild or crazy stories from previous tours? Tell us one!
Well, this is something we’re still dealing with but basically earlier this year our transmission crapped out in New Mexico so we had to get it fixed to continue touring. We went negative in our account just paying for the dang thing, and it took 6 days to fix and if it weren’t for the Cracker Barrel in Las Cruces we basically would have starved. It finally was fixed and worked fine until it broke down again 3 months later in San Diego. The transmission mechanic said that whoever put this transmission in used bad parts, old parts, wrong parts, and even put parts in upside down! Needless to say we broke the bank again trying to pay for the new one because the sketchy shop in Las Cruces had fraudulent “warranties” that were a huge joke. All in all, bad times but we made the best of it for sure!
If you could pick any 3 bands to be on tour with, who would it be?
Every Time I Die, BTMH, and Stone Temple Pilots (just to so I could die happy).
Tell us a random fact about each member.
Cory was probably a full grown man at age 12, Ryan drives his mustang like a nascar driver, Eric sleeps with his eyes and mouth open, and Matt can talk anyone into anything.
What’s something your fans, or anyone, would be shocked to know about you?
It’s not that shocking but only two of us are actually from Texas, the rest of the band is from out of state. And no, we are NOT from Memphis for the last time!
Who inspires you musically and personally?
Musically, I’ve been really stoked lately on the tasteful musicianship in August Burns Red. Those guys are sooo good.
What’s your favorite part of touring?
Eating Taco Bell everyday and having kids come up to me and tell me that they’re glad I decided to make music because it inspires them.
If you were a T-shirt what would you say?
Probably “Huh?”
What song by another artist do you wish you would have written?
“Lollipop” by Lil Wayne because then I would be rich enough to retire right now.
What are your plans for this coming fall? Any tours, after the UK/Europe one?
We have stuff in the works, and a lot of big plans/announcements to go along with all the new music we’ll be putting out in the next couple months.
Is there anything in the near future that fans could look forward to?
BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW MUSIC. And to answer the question I’ve been getting a lot, it is awesome, and heavy.
What are some goals you would like to achieve before the end of the year?
Dominate the UK and Europe and come back home with so cash for once, and after the new music comes out, get the recognition I feel we’ve deserved.
Thank you so much for doing this interview. Is there anything you’d like to add?
You are very welcome! Keep your eyes and ears ready for September! New face melting music is on the way!!
